Crocodile's Lair Chardonnay 2018

 Region: Overberg, near Villiersdorp.

The grapes for Crocodile's Lair Chardonnay are grown on a separate property over the mountain near Villiersdorp. The name of the wine refers to the view of the lake below given to the vineyard known as Kaaimansgat which translated is Crocodile's Lair. The wine is light with a hint of spiciness. The grapes are fermented in oak but as little as 20% new oak, so the vanilla tones are quite subdued. A very refined Chardonnay.  

The German magazine Weinwelt did a survey of 340 of the world’s top Chardonnays and voted Crocodiles Lair as 7th – an outstanding accolade. In addition, this wine has been awarded 93 points by Tim Atkin Master of Wine, a Silver by the IWSC, a Silver medal in Decanter Wine awards and 4.5 stars by the John Platter guide.

Bouchard Finlayson was formed in 1989 by Paul Bouchard and Peter Finlayson. Paul Bouchard was a well-known winemaker in Burgundy you will recognise his other wines by their prolific names like Gevrey Chambertin, Pommard and Musigny to name a few. These of course are produced under very different regulations and systems similar to a communal wine classification. Here in Walker Bay I am sure Mr Bouchard would have relished the opportunity to create his own wine from his own parcels of land. The nod to Burgundy continues in the style of the vine management and also the flagship wine “Tete de Cuvee”, an old term that was used in Burgundy which referred to the best of the best blend from the best vineyards. These are now called Grand Cru vineyards.
